Nov. 26, 2010 – Little Beaver’s line of MDL Mechanical Earth Drills features a 360-RPM operating speed, while the compact design allows access to areas unreachable by skid steer-mounted augers. Built to be reliable, powerful and lightweight, the Little Beaver says the MDL drills are ideal for a variety of industries, including rental centres, fence and sign installers, landscape and building contractors, and parks and recreation departments.

Four models are available in the line, each featuring an overhead valve gas engine. The MDL-5B and MDL-5H are available with a Briggs & Stratton or Honda 5.5-horsepower engine, and are mounted on 8-inch semi-pneumatic tires. Offering the choice of an 8-horsepower Briggs & Stratton or Honda engine, the MDL-8B and MDL-8H come mounted on 10-inch pneumatic tires. The entire unit offers a smaller footprint for easy access in any area, and can be used on lawns, golf course greens and other delicate surfaces without causing damage.

The MDL drills feature a steel torque tube, allowing operators the ability to use large diameter augers without fear of dangerous kickback. In addition to increasing operator safety, the torque tube provides easier drilling, reducing operator effort and fatigue.

For further operator safety, all models feature a centrifugal clutch. If a buried object is encountered or the auger is overloaded, the clutch automatically slips, protecting the operator from serious injury, and the drive cable and transmission gears from damage.

Two different styles of kits are offered to convert the MDL drill into a horizontal boring machine. For drilling up to four feet under sidewalks, the sidewalk auger kit includes a 5-foot extension, with a universal joint, and a 5-foot auger. Useful for applications like plumbing, electrical and water lines, the water drilling kit includes a water swivel and achieves horizontal drilling distances up to 40 feet.

The MDL drills are designed with high-quality features for reduced maintenance and extended life. The heavy-duty transmission, built by Little Beaver, includes cooling fins for quick heat dissipation and improved longevity. Furthermore, all steel features are powder-coated for enhanced strength and durability.

A universal auger is included and offers the ability to easily change out tips depending on surface type. Included standard is a hard-faced tip, suitable for typical lawn and garden dirt, and sandy loam-type soils. A heavy-duty rock tip is optional, and works well in rocky soils. For the toughest surfaces, including hard clay, asphalt and frozen ground, the optional carbide-blade tip is ideal. Easily changeable, snap-on augers are offered in 36- and 42-inch lengths, with diameters ranging from 1.5- to 16-inch. To reach further digging depths, snap-on auger extensions are also available, in both full-flighted and tube configurations.

To further allow end-users the ability to create a customized solution, each drill offers several additional optional features. 10-inch pneumatic wheels, standard on the MDL-8B and MDL-8H, are an available option on the MDL-5B and MDL-5H. To protect the engine, steel roll cages are available for all models. A specially designed rick-sha carrier is optional and features large, 20-inch semi-pneumatic wheels, a convenient pull handle and transmission cradle for enhanced mobility.

Each MDL drill is backed by a one-year warranty, with the engine covered by a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.
