May 12, 2010 – The new Hilti DS TS20-E Electric Wall Saw features high-frequency motor technology and HTC intelligent control to achieve performance. According to Hilti, high-frequency electric drives on wall saws, like the DS TS20-E, are now becoming established in this class and succeeding conventional hydraulic systems.

The DS TS20-E is designed for use by concrete drilling and sawing service contractors. Features includ Hilti Traction Control (HTC), an electronic saw advance control system that the company says ensures maximum sawing performance by making full use of the electric power available. Critical drive parameters are monitored and measured continuously, while a digital control system calculates the optimum saw head advance speed. HTC’s sensitivity and efficiency become particularly obvious when the blade runs into reinforcing bars in the concrete. Blade jamming or even complete stalling of the saw can be avoided to a great extent. Tests have shown that this control system also extends saw blade life.

When powered by a 32 A supply, the DS TS20-E provides an output of 15 kW (S1, continuous operation) and maintains a constant torque with all blade diameters — 24 to 48 inch — without need for mechanical gears. Blade speed is infinitely variable and can thus be adjusted exactly to suit the blade diameter used and the type of material being cut. Hilti says this saw offers a level of performance previously attainable only with hydraulically-powered systems running on a 63 A electric supply.

Stowed on two trolleys, the entire set of equipment can be transported to the workplace and set up and made ready for use quickly. The carriage and blade drive motor form a single unit with a weight of only 77 lb, thereby avoiding the need for a removable blade motor and potentially troublesome motor mounting flange where dirt can enter the system. As its point of balance lies directly between the two hand grips, the saw head is very easy to handle.
