President’s report – May 2008

Hello rental professionals!

In January I attended the British Columbia show in Cloverdale. I met many new people and visited with some old friends. I am proud of what has been accomplished at the British Columbia show. This show has all of the elements exercised in other Canadian shows. All of the organizers and volunteers have done a great job!

Good reports are coming from Ontario about the Canadian Rental Mart. Congrats to all who were involved in co-ordinating this show. This show is a combined effort between the Canadian Rental Association (CRA) office, the CRA in Ontario and Annex Publishing. Great results have come from this coalition of groups.

The Prairie Regional Trade Show in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was another huge success. The event was the largest trade show in prairie history. Again the entertainment was top drawer. Comedian Herb Dixon is undoubtedly, one of the funniest people I have ever seen. A silent auction and 50/50 was held on the Friday night. $3500 was raised with the proceeds donated to the Dorothy Wellnitz Foundation.

The Dorothy Wellnitz Foundation is a scholarship for Canadian students. This is the Canadian version of the American Rental Association (ARA) Foundation. Canadian rental store personnel and their children can apply for this scholarship through the ARA Foundation. When sending in your donations to the ARA Foundation, be sure to specify that your contribution is to go toward the Dorothy Wellnitz Foundation.

My scheduled visit to St. Hyacinthe for the 2008 Quebec show included the company of the world famous Doug Mitchell (CRA Chairman of the Board). We both looked forward to seeing everyone there.

We have the economic gas pedal to the floor in western Canada. There is no speed limit and there are no radar traps. Everyone is going as fast as they can, while trying to maintain control. Lucky for us in Saskatchewan, there are no hills or blind corners to keep us from passing.

The Canadian rental industry is alive and well. It is growing 15 percent year over year. This industry generates $5.8 billion in revenue per year. The revenue has just about quadrupled over a 10 year period. This industry is becoming a real force to be reckoned with and is definitely a noticeable part of Canada’s economy.

Au mois de janvier je suis allé au Salon de la Location de la Colombie-Britannique, à Surrey. J’y ai rencontré beaucoup de nouveaux gens, et j’ai pu aussi rendre visite à de nombreux amis. Je suis fier de ce qui s’est accompli au Salon de la Colombie-Britannique. Ce Salon de la Location contient tous les événements que l’on retrouve dans les autres salons d’exposition au Canada. Tous les organisateurs et bénévoles ont manifestement accompli un très bon travail.

Le Canadian Rental Mart en Ontario a aussi été un succès. Félicitations à tous ceux et celles qui ont participé à cet événement. Cette année, le Canadian Rental Mart a été rendu possible
grâce à la coopération entre les bureaux de la CRA, l’association locale de l’Ontario et Annex Publishing. Cette coalition des trois groupes a fait que le Canadian Rental Mart soit un beau succès.

Le Salon de la Location de la région des Prairies au mois de mars fut un autre grand succès. Historiquement parlant, ce fut le plus grand salon d’exposition de la région. Cette fois encore, le spectacle de divertissement était de très haute qualité. Le comique Herb Dixon est sans aucun doute l’un des plus drôle que nous n’ayons encore jamais vus. Un encan chinois et un tirage 50/50 avaient été planifiés pour le vendredi soir. Le montant de 3,500.00$ a été prélevé pour la Fondation Dorothy Wellnitz.

La Fondation Dorothy Wellnitz est une bourse qui est attribuée aux étudiants Canadiens. C’est la version Canadienne de la Fondation de l’ARA. Le personnel des centres de location et leurs enfants peuvent faire demande pour cette bourse à travers la Fondation de l’ARA. Lorsque vous contribuez à la Fondation de l’ARA, assurez-vous de spécifier que votre don soit placé à la Fondation Dorothy Wellnitz.

À la fin mars, je me suis rendu à St. Hyacinthe pour le Salon de la Location 2008. J’y étais accompagné par le très renommé Doug Mitchell (Président du conseil d’administration). Nous étions heureux de rencontrer tout le monde.

L’économie dans l’ouest du Canada va de bon train. Il semble n’y avoir aucune limite quant à la vitesse du développement, ni de contrôle radar. Les gens semblent bouger aussi vite que possible, tout en gardant leur sang-froid. Heureusement pour nous en Saskatchewan, il n’y a ni colline, ni impasse à contourner! L’industrie de la location est bien vivante. Elle grandit de 15 pourcent d’année en année. Cette industrie rapporte 5.8 milliard de dollars en terme de revenue par an. Au cours des 10 dernières années, nous avons remarqué qu’elle a presque quadruplé par rapport aux années précédentes. Cette industrie devient de plus en plus une véritable force et une grande part de l’économie du Canada.
