Update your propane ROT for free at the Rental Mart

This course has been designed to train rental store operators to safely use propane-fuelled construction heaters and torches. In addition, students will learn how propane cylinders are to be stored at a construction site. This course covers all the updated requirements of the 2015 edition of B149.2 Propane Storage and Handling Code. After completing the four lessons within this course, students will have an understanding of:

• Propane and cylinger basics and primary construction heater components
• Installation, storage and use of propane cylinders and tank systems
• Installation and use of propane construction heaters
• Connecting and using propane torches

Requirements for how propane cylinders and tanks systems are installed and used are covered to provide clarity. Tanks systems to support larger heaters must be installed by a certified gas technician.

Upon successful completion of both the written exam and the skills evaluation, students will be issued a Record of Training (ROT) Certificate by the instructor. Fuels Learning Centre ROT certificates are recognized by regulatory authorities across Canada and each certificate is customized to meet regulatory requirements of the province where the employee works. Instructors may complete the skills evaluation using a mobile device connected to an online learning management system, immediately triggering the release of the ROT certificate. ROT certificates issued by the Fuels Learning Centre are valid for 36 months following the successful completion of the skills evaluation.

About the trainer

Alex Beatty is an independent consultant based in Arthur, Ont. He is the president and CEO of Beatty Petroleum Consulting. Beatty was instrumental in assisting the propane industry to comply with the new propane regulations, as it was required to make sweeping changes and implement the requirements of Risk and Safety Management Plans (RSMPs) for all propane transfer facilities in Ontario. He has been elected to the board of directors for the Ontario Propane Association. During his time as a member of the OPA he sat as a member of the federally mandated Emergency Response Assistance Plan (ERAP) for Transport Canada. Currently he is a member in good standing of the Canadian Propane Association (CPA). In his association with the CPA he is currently a member of the Transportation Committee and was a past vice-chair of the Codes and Standards Committee. Beatty is also is a member in good standing with the South Western Petroleum Association (SWPA). He was instrumental in SWPA lobbying the Ministry of Revenue to claim back road taxes on clear diesel fuel when it was used for flushing sulphur from delivery trucks. He is a member of the Risk Reduction Group for the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) B149.2 Committee.
