Cooper Equipment Rentals announced today that it has acquired Star Rentals.   Star Rentals is the largest independent equipment rental company in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Established in 1984, Star Rentals services the Metro Vancouver area through its locations in White Rock, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Burnaby and Maple Ridge. Over the past several decades, Star Rentals has developed a reputation for reliable, value-added service and has established a loyal base of customers that rely on the company to provide complete equipment rental solutions. Doug Johnson, the President and principal owner of Star Rentals, will assume a senior role with Cooper, and will help manage and grow Cooper's business in British Columbia.
Garth Scott, founder of Scott Sales and Marketing in Hantsport, N.S., passed away Jan. 10. Scott was a regular at all Atlantic Canadian Rental Association events and livened up every gathering with his displays of photos from past events and his tall tales from his travels all over the east coast. Scott will be remembered as well by Atlantic rental people for his love of antique cars.
Jan. 11, 2019 - United Rentals has announced that its board of directors has appointed Matthew Flannery, the company’s president and chief operating officer, to become chief executive officer, while retaining the role as president. Additionally, the board has appointed Michael Kneeland, the current chief executive officer, to become non-executive chairman. Bobby Griffin, a 10-year member of the board and chairman of the Strategy Committee, will become lead independent director.

Jan. 8, 2019 - The Brandt Group of Companies demonstrated its strong support of the province's natural resource industry at a rally held for oil and gas producers at the Legislative Building in Regina, Tuesday, January 8. The well-attended event, hosted by Canada Action and Rally 4 Resources, was one of a number of similar gatherings being organized across Canada as a major show of support for embattled Canadian natural resource companies.
Finning International Inc. has announced it has reached an agreement to acquire 100 percent of 4Refuel Canada and 4Refuel US (“4Refuel”) for approximately $260 million. In 2018, 4Refuel is expected to generate net revenue(3) of approximately $110 million and EBITDA of $33.5 million. Greater than 95 percent of 4Refuel’s profitability is generated in Canada.
Voisin’s Equipment Rental and Universal Rental Services Inc. have been acquired by Sunbelt Rentals Inc. Voisin’s Equipment Rental is one of the largest independent equipment rental companies in North America. Based in Guelph Ontario, the Company specializes in aerial equipment rentals, sales and repair services to over 900 customers in the residential and commercial construction industry. Voisin’s has a fleet of nearly 2500 aerial lifts and telehandlers. Universal Rental Services is an Ontario-based general tool and construction equipment rental company offering products ranging from chainsaws to large bulldozers. Universal operates three facilities located in Guelph, Fergus and Orangeville.
In its 2018 fall economic statement, the federal government has announced its intention to triple the depreciation allowed in the first year that a business puts capital investments into use. The change applies to a wide range of capital assets, including buildings, computers and construction equipment. In an example provided in the statement, the allowed first-year depreciation on earth moving equipment would move from 15 to 45 percent.

Dec. 3, 2018 - Ashtead has announced that Geoff Drabble has decided to step down from his role as Chief Executive at the end of the current financial year on May 1, 2019, and to retire from the Group on November 30, 2019. He will be succeeded on May 1, by Brendan Horgan, currently Group Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive of Sunbelt Rentals the Group’s North American business which accounted for 87% of the Group’s revenue in the last financial year. Geoff will work closely with Brendan and the Board over the next few months to ensure a smooth transition and be available thereafter to support the business until he leaves the Group.
Nov. 28, 2018 - Serious Labs has announced that Brad Boehler has joined its board of directors. Boehler will advise on business and strategy topics, and provide counsel regarding the compliance of VR simulators with a variety of standards. His appointment expands the board to seven members.
It’s the end of an era here at Canadian Rental Service. Ed Cosman, this magazine’s sales manager for the last 21 years, will be retiring at the end of the year.
