Champion Motor Graders has announced that its new Production Class Graders will come standard with a turbocharged Cummins QSB6.7 Tier 3 in line 6 cylinder 120 hp (89 kW) engine. The Champion C110 C Motor Grader will be demonstrated around North America during “The Main Event” Demo Tour, which starts in Memphis, TN at the Scott Equipment Company’s Open House on February 20th. Weighing in at 23,500 lb. Champion’s new Production Class Graders are designed to bridge the gap between compact and traditional full sized graders. With the increased power and better torque curve offered by the emissions compliant Cummins Tier 3 engine, the C110 C Grader is poised to become the versatile mid-sized grader package of choice for increased job applications.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer these Production Class Graders that pack more punch for big jobs in small spaces,” says Bryan Abernathy, Executive Vice President for Champion Motor Graders. “With our line’s hallmark agile footwork to get in and out of tight corners fast, plus maximum torque at 120 hp, the C110 C is the true heavyweight Champion among today’s small graders.”

Getting more productivity out of less horsepower

According to Jeff McKee, Vice President Engineering at Champion Motor Graders, the major benefit of the larger 6 cylinder engine on the C110 C Grader is the fact that the engine works at the bottom of its range and remains under-stressed.

“What the two extra cylinders primarily offer is a smoother drive and better torque-curve at the lower RPMs,” says McKee. “The grader’s torque-drive doesn’t drop off like it would with a 4 cylinder engine.  What operators should notice is much less use of the engine’s inching pedal when they’re running the graders slowly or in fine grading applications, which ultimately gives them more power to do the job at hand.”

McKee says that operators can achieve the same smooth control at low speeds and fine grading feel with the 6 cylinder’s conventional direct-gear drive that they do with the hydrostatic drive on Champion’s Compact Graders equipped with a Cummins QSB4.3 Tier 3 engine.

“Torque directly translates to the drawbar pull,” says McKee. “The more torque you have, the more ability you have to move more dirt at lower ground speed. It really comes in handy in more delicate operations and also allows the machine to carry a heavier load without changing gears.  It also gives the operator one less thing to worry about.”

“Having the Cummins Tier 3 engine standard on our new Production Class Graders is really a win-win situation,” says Abernathy. “Our customers get to keep all the power they have become accustomed to in our compact graders, while at the same time enjoying increased engine life and lower noise with the knowledge that they are helping the environment. We invite all of our customers to come out and see the Champion Production Class Graders up close and personal during ‘The Main Event’ Demo Tour.”
