July 27, 2009 – SMS Rents has again expanded its service network in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) with the opening of its store in Gormley, Ontario.
Store manager Al Carruthers opened the doors for business on May 4, just days after SMS Rents officially took possession of the 7,000 sq. ft. building at 47 Cardico Drive in Gormley. The two-acre site backs onto Highway 404, north of Stouffville Road, off Woodbine.
Situated within Richmond Hill and Whitchurch-Stouffville in York Region, Gormley provides SMS Rents with an ideal base for serving customers throughout the northern GTA, within easy reach of major centres from Barrie to Oshawa. The initial staff of six employees meant several new jobs were created here, and Al Carruthers reports that he will be hiring more staff in the near future.
“We have two sales reps out on the road seeing customers now,” he says. “Our current customers like our expanded GTA support and we have signed up a number of new accounts within our first few weeks. We have equipment going out every day.”
The store has been well received in the area, which sees considerable construction activity in the infrastructure and commercial building sector. According to Carruthers, the store’s ready access to large equipment has been a key factor in opening new doors. “Our Heavy Equipment Centre in Brampton has definitely been a factor, especially among roadbuilders and bridge contractors. They appreciate that we can be their one-stop source for everything from a 75,000 pound excavator to small loaders and traffic barricades to safety vests. No other rental store offers that kind of range”.
Carruthers has extensive personal experience with construction equipment, having been an equipment operator and a buyer for a large construction firm. More recently, he managed the SMS Rents store in Mississauga, where he worked closely with the Heavy Equipment Centre to coordinate customer requirements. He sees growing potential throughout the York-Durham area, and will move quickly to expand his inventory. “There is a lot of construction here and the region’s population is still growing.”
The president of SMS Rents, Marcel Langlois, notes that “…the opening of our Gormley location is the second expansion for SMS Rents in as many months. In April, our Sudbury store relocated to a larger, 17,000 sq. ft. facility near the core of the city. That’s in addition to the new stores we opened in Ottawa and Mississauga last fall.” The large new facility in Sudbury also serves as a regional hub, providing additional inventory and specialty equipment for other SMS Rents stores in northern Ontario.
Al Carruthers is planning an open house for York-Durham customers with a Grand Opening event to be scheduled for later this summer. Customers and contractors are invited to meet the Gormley staff at Cardico Drive to sample the Job Ready philosophy that is driving the growth of SMS Rents.
“While we are a growing force in the equipment rental market, we are firmly committed to the local focus of every store,” says Langlois. “That’s our key to ensure the best in personal service and the right equipment to meet local customer needs.”
SMS Rents is the newest family of rental locations in Canada serving customers in the Construction, Industrial and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) markets providing project solutions with a complete selection of equipment and tools with 14 locations in Ontario and Quebec.
