Larger quarters in the Big Nickel

SMS Rents has moved into a newly renovated, 17,000 sq. ft.
facility in Sudbury, Ont.

April 28, 2009 – SMS Rents in Sudbury, Ont., is stepping out into the local limelight with a new address that is more centrally located and 40 percent larger than its previous store.

Brett Moroso, regional manager for SMS Rents in Northern Ontario, explains why the company decided to go ahead with the move, even while the current economic situation seems to argue against expansion. “Our old location was small, hard to find and no longer served our needs. We simply outgrew it. The new store has a great street presence. It is conveniently located and its much larger size allows us to offer many more products and services than before.”

According to Moroso, small contractors and homeowners are an important component of the customer base in other SMS Rents stores. The industrial nature of the area around the former store offered little to attract these customers. As a result, many of the store’s potential clients were unaware of the full product range that SMS Rents offers. Despite the limitations, the store enjoyed great success through its outside sales efforts, by establishing strong relationships with Sudbury’s mining and larger industrial businesses.

Rick Lascelles, manager of the Sudbury store, sees the new location as a very positive move. “Our new store is larger, easily accessible, more functional and far more visible” he says. “We are within sight of the Vale Inco smelter, and right next door to a popular Tim Horton’s coffee shop.”

The 17,000 sq. ft. facility at Pacific Avenue, fronting on Lorne Street, was previously occupied by the Cambrian Fitness Centre. Refurbished and now fronting onto Lorne, the store fills two floors and features five service bay doors for easy pickup and delivery.
“The new facility is well suited to the expanded offering of products, equipment and services.  We have more useable display space and a large shop for our technicians to service customers’ equipment as well as our rental fleet,” says Lascelles.

The new retail space will showcase an expanded inventory of equipment, safety gear and contractor supplies. “We’re building on our one-stop concept for equipment rentals, sales and supplies.”

With the new facility, SMS Rents strengthens its status as the dominant equipment rental company in Northern Ontario and enhances the role of the Sudbury location as a regional hub. The staff and equipment here provide support to other SMS Rents stores in Kapuskasing, Timmins, North Bay and Bracebridge.

With the prospect of continued growth, Lascelles is adding new staff to support the store’s two outside sales representatives, Chris Salo and Joey Martin. New personnel will soon be on board for counter sales and delivery services.
